Hospital Bed Exchange connects people who no longer need a hospital bed with families who do — always free, and handled with care.
When a loved one's care needs change — whether they've recovered, moved into a facility, or passed away — the hospital bed that helped them is often still in good condition, and no longer needed. At the same time, another family is caring for someone at home and needs one. A hospital bed can cost well over a thousand dollars new, and Medicare and private insurance frequently decline to cover it. Hospital Bed Exchange exists to close that gap: we connect the family that has a bed to give away with the family that needs one, at no cost to either side.
Hospital Bed Exchange is a national outreach program of Fair Lawn Medical Equipment Gemach, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. The Gemach's core program lends durable medical equipment — wheelchairs, walkers, rollators, transport chairs, and related items — directly to families in its local community, free of charge.
Hospital beds are different: they are large and impractical to warehouse and re-lend the way a wheelchair can be. Rather than turn donors away, we built Hospital Bed Exchange to do for hospital beds what the local lending program does for smaller equipment — just structured as a direct, one-time match between a donor and a recipient in the same area, instead of equipment that passes through our own inventory.
We don't warehouse, resell, or take possession of any bed. We simply identify a donor and a recipient near each other and introduce them directly.
We look for a match within 50 miles of every donor and every request, no matter what state it comes from, so pickup stays practical for both sides.
There is never a fee to donate or to receive a bed through our program. The only cost involved is the recipient's own transport.
Every submission is reviewed by our staff before any contact information is shared. We do not publish donor or recipient details publicly, and we only connect two parties once we've identified a plausible match within range.
We're continuing to grow our reach state by state, so more families can find a match close to home.
