Request a Bed

How to Get a Free Hospital Bed

A nationwide nonprofit that matches families with people giving a hospital bed away.

Who the program is for

A hospital bed at home changes what care is possible — safer transfers, better positioning for breathing, fewer pressure injuries, and a carer who is not lifting somebody unaided. Insurance frequently declines to cover one, and retail prices run well beyond what most households can absorb during an illness.

Hospital Bed Exchange connects families in that position with people who have a bed standing unused. We are a national program of Fair Lawn Gemach Corp, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and we serve every state.

How to request one

1

Submit the request form

We ask for your ZIP code, how to reach you, and a short note about the situation. Mention a preferred size if you have one, though matching you with whatever is available nearby is usually faster.

2

We search for a donor near you

Our team looks for somebody within fifty miles offering a suitable bed. Where one is already waiting, this can conclude within days. Otherwise your request remains open and we return to it as offers arrive.

3

We put you in touch

You and the donor receive each other's details together, and you arrange collection directly between yourselves.

4

Arrange the move

Hospital beds are heavy and awkward, so a licensed mover is the sensible route. Booking and paying for that mover is your responsibility.

What is free, and what is not

The bed is given to you outright. Nobody charges for it, and we take no fee at any stage. Transporting it is the part you pay for — the donor is not expected to fund delivery, and our organization does not fund it either. Budget for a professional move and you will know where you stand.

How long the wait is

This depends on geography more than anything else. Requests in areas where beds are already being offered can be matched in days; those in regions with no nearby donors sometimes wait weeks. We do not close a request because time has passed, and there is no queue position to lose. If your circumstances are urgent, say so on the form so we can weigh it properly.

Other avenues worth trying

We would rather you find a bed quickly than wait on us alone, so it is worth pursuing these at the same time:

What we will not tell you

We will not claim a bed is guaranteed, because it depends on a nearby family having one to give. We will not quote a delivery date we cannot keep. Where nothing suitable exists in your region, we would rather say so than leave you waiting on a possibility that is not there.
