FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from donors and families requesting a hospital bed.

Yes. There is never a fee to donate a bed or to receive one through Hospital Bed Exchange. The only cost involved is the recipient's own transport.
The recipient is responsible for arranging and paying for a professional, licensed mover to transport the bed. Hospital beds are bulky and generally shouldn't be moved without the right equipment, so we ask recipients to plan for this cost before agreeing to a match.
It depends on whether a donor or recipient is already active near you. If a match is already nearby, it can happen within days. If not, your submission stays open and we reach out as soon as a suitable match is found — there's no need to resubmit.
Hospital Bed Exchange serves the entire United States. We search for a match within 50 miles of every donor and every request, regardless of what state it comes from.
The bed should be clean and in working condition. We accept manual, semi-electric, and fully electric hospital beds in Full, Queen, and Dual/Split King sizes, as well as hospital cribs.
Yes — both the donation and request forms let you select "Hospital Crib" as the item type, and we match those the same way we match hospital beds.
Yes. We never publish donor or recipient details publicly. Contact information is only shared once we've identified a match, and both the donor and recipient receive each other's information at the same time.
Your request stays active. As we continue to grow the program and more donors submit beds in your area, we will reach out the moment a suitable match becomes available.
We're a national program of Fair Lawn Medical Equipment Gemach, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. Read more on our About page.
Fill out the donation or request form on our homepage — it takes about two minutes. You can also read our full How It Works page first if you'd like more detail.
